Words… ( this isn’t about food )
We use lots of words to describe who we are. “the church” “christian community” “believers”. The list can be infinite. As of late it seems that some much of our time goes into talking about who is right and who is wrong. Does this back up any of the words we use to describe ourselves? I dunno.
Who is right? Who is wrong? What is the “next” thing? We are constantly asking these questions in our Christian communities. There seems to me at times almost to be a war happening here in the church. It is a war of doctrine, a war about who said what, and he believes this, and she affirms that. Why are we arguing as the church? Why are we fighting over what each other are teaching?
I didn’t go to bible college and I don’t claim to be any sort of theologian, but I can smell separation and competition a mile away, and it feels like we are competing. Why? Have we forgotten what Paul says in 2 Timothy 2:14 “Remind everyone about these things, and command them in God’s presence to stop fighting over words. Such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them”
We literally can ruin our purpose as the church when we begin to argue “over words”. We have such a platform as the church, “to help the sick, to offer shelter and to do nothing but make Jesus famous.
The next thing is the same thing it has always been, Jesus Christ and him crucified. This is truly the hope of the world and when we present him in all his glory people will come from all over to hear. We exist for no other reason other than lifting him up and sharing his perfect love.
Maybe it’s time to stop arguing over words?
Maybe I’m wrong, but either way Jesus is alive and real and waiting for us to make the sacrifice of our lives and say yes.
